Well, it is done.

After a tricky substitution, I have finished the 2010 USA Olympic hat for the Knitting Olympics. It was hard, and it got on my last nerve, but I did it.

And oddly, I feel proud.

Almost an Olympic Ending...

My Olympic watching and knitting is almost through and I have enjoyed it all.

I had to make a last minute substitution in the knitting project due to a "pet related yarn incident". Instead of knitting the socks, I am knitting the hat from the opening ceremonies. It has been tricky and fun, and I think it may be too small, but I will block and slightly stretch it and hope for the best. If all else fails, my dog will have an amazing hat.

My favorite thing so far? Getting my Olympic red mittens from Canada. I may wear them through spring. Joy in the little things = good.

The Knitting Olympics Athletes Pledge

2010 Knitting Olympics

And this is why I love knitters of all shapes and sizes. We participate in madness like this. Here is a bit about it, straight from the Yarn Harlot's blog:

Concept: You must cast on a project during the Opening Ceremonies of the Winter Olympics, Friday, February 12, 2010 and finish before the Olympic flame goes out Sunday, February 28. That's 17 days.

Rules:
1. The project must be a challenge for you to complete in 17 days.
2. There are no rules about what a challenge would be. Like the real Olympics, there are many areas to compete in. If you are a new knitter, then a garter stitch baby sweater might do...If you are experienced, use your own conscience.
3. While this is intended to be somewhat difficult (like the Olympics) it is not intended to ruin your life. Don't set yourself up for failure. (Olympic athletes may cry, but they do not whine pitifully, sob and threaten members of their family with pointed sticks because they haven't slept in five days. ) This is intended to (like the Olympics) require some measure of sacrifice, and be difficult, but it should be possible to attain.
4. No casting on before the flame is lit. (The opening ceremonies run from 6-8 pst. If you can't watch, then I'd pick a time in there.)
5. Finish before the flame goes out.
6. You may swatch before the games.

Sounds good, doesn't it? Meat On Your Bones

This is a new part of Skein and Bones that will be dedicated to my cooking/baking exploits. I vary from easy, minutes to table type meals to offerings via my beloved Julia Child.

Today, for the first installment of "Meat On Your Bones" we are going to talk pretzels. Soft, buttery creations that will leave you floating on a happy carb loaded cloud.

Better Than Mall Pretzels

This is a recipe I just tried and was a hit all around. It is warm, delightfully buttery pretzels. Like at the mall, only much better because you can top them with anything you wish. We did some salted, some cinnamon and sugar and even a parmesan cheese pretzel. This makes 8 pretzels, and you can quickly warm any leftovers in the microwave for a few seconds. This recipe is from King Arthur Flour Baker's Companion.

Dough:

2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon sugar

2 1/4 teaspoons instant yeast*

7/8 to 1 cup warm water*

topping:

1/2 cup warm water

1 teaspoon sugar

coarse salt

3 tablespoons melted butter

Place all dough ingredients in a large bowl or the bowl of a mixer and beat until combined. Knead dough by hand or in the mixer for about 5 minutes until the dough is soft and smooth. Dust with flour to keep from sticking and place in a plastic bag. Seal bag and let rest for about 30 minutes. *(I used regular yeast instead of instant, and just let it sit in the warm water a few minutes before adding the rest of the ingredients.)

Preheat oven to 500°. Prepare two baking sheets by either lightly greasing or lining with parchment paper.

Remove dough from bag and place on a lightly greased work surface. Divide dough evenly into 8 portions. Let rest, uncovered, for about 5 minutes.

Combine the 1/2 cup warm water and teaspoon of sugar, mixing until sugar is dissolved. Roll each piece of dough out into a long rope (about 28 inches) and twist into a pretzel shape. Dip pretzels into sugar water and place on prepared baking sheets. Sprinkle with coarse salt and let rest for about 10 minutes.

Bake for 8-9 minutes, until pretzels are golden brown. Remove from oven and brush thoroughly with melted butter. Eat warm and enjoy!

I have not blogged in a VERY long time, and that has been okay. I have lived life, had fun with friends, kids and pets, and rung in 2010.

I hope to be a bit better about the blog going forward, more knitting and random posting, and above all, keep it just as I need it to be, whatever that is at the time.

Meanwhile, here are a few things that I have knitted as gifts, and can finally be posted. I love them all, and the people they were knit for were happy campers.

Saving Poppy

Welcome to Poppy Blue, a new friend that reminds me of how anything worthwhile takes a lot of perseverance, that every life has value, and doing what you believe in not only heals yourself, but a piece of the world.

Poppy comes from a high kill shelter in Kentucky, most of the dogs are only allowed a week or less to be there, then they have to be put down. It isn't because the shelter is bad, it is that these are poor, small shelters that can get 300 dogs A MONTH. There is only 20 kennels. It is a sad fact of pet overpopulation and our struggle to make ends meet in these tough economic times. Poppy was set to be put to sleep last Tuesday, but instead, she is starting a new life with a new family.

We cannot save them all, but we can start with one. One life that is a gift, a life that has meaning and can bring light to very dark places. Poppy is a light, and we brought her here. It was a huge effort between the shelter in Kentucky, volunteers, and myself and my fantastic sister Lee.

After a long day of travel, her flight arrived at nearly 1am Friday morning. She is kind and loving, and is even enjoying the snow and cold here in Minnesota.

Poppy has become a little symbol that truly we can do no great things, only small things with great love. (Thank you Mother Theresa) I hope she reminds us all that we matter in small ways and big ones, and together, we can change our world little by little.

Why does this post start with a picture of my rabbit, Harvey? Well, Harvey is my exhibit A, so to speak. When Harvey is tired, he flops down with an epic and emphatic gesture that shakes the room. Then he sleeps. When he is hungry, he rolls his purple dish around until it is filled. If he's thirsty, he'll knock the water bottle off the hinge to let you know. When he is happy, he leaps about and grinds his bunny teeth in sheer joy.

Harvey does not worry about what people will think of him, he does not care about what will happen beyond right now. He is loud, and silly and wonderful, and he is that way because he does things without the slightest care of how he appears.

I know he is a rabbit, and that hardly is a comparison for human behavior. Or is it? I think I am going to take a lesson from my furry, floppy friend and try and let go of how I am perceived by "the group". I need to listen to myself, and learn to leap and flop a bit more easily.

It has been a strange few days. Losing Magnus so suddenly, then dealing with all the emotions that comes with the terriory. I was shocked at the amount of saddness I felt. I am sad for his short life, I am sad for myself who misses him so.

Just when I was in that saddness, the strangest thing happened. It came to my attention that there was a Flemish Giant mix at the humane society that really needed a home. He was depressed and miserable in all the chaos. I didn't know if I was ready to move on, but something told me that he needed my help. So I welcomed a sweet, sad stranger into my home. He immediately climbed into my lap, and just enjoyed the feeling of peace and security he felt. I couldn't believe that I had found a bunny who needed me as much as I needed him.

He is so pleased with all the attention, has been introduced to raisins and carrots, and is truly a lovely soul. I have been blessed again by an animal too lovely to imagine. I named him Harvey, and he is my constant reminder that we never know what happiness can come from grief, or what life has in store for us. Only one thing is sure, that life hops on.

Missing Magnus...

Today my beloved Magnus MacGreggor, my Flemish Giant bunny, passed away from this world very suddenly.

The vet says that it was congestive heart failure, due to a heart defect that was unknown to any of us.

I am so full of sadness and grief, to others he may have been "just a bunny",but to me, he was the angel with impossibly long ears.

Now my angel can fly.

Goodbye dear boy.

My sister and I have watched this show since it was first on television, and though it isn't on anymore, it can live on forever in our memories, DVD's and the internet. So when I saw this chart, I knew I had to make it for her birthday.

I found the chart for the pattern on Ravelry.com, and the idea of the pillow came from my notion she needed a decoration for her snazzy new car.

It was a hit, and I hope it always reminds her that through all kinds of shitstorms, we have kept our sense of humor, and laughed at even the tragic times. She is the Servo to my Crow.

Well, I have finished my special diet and veggies and fruits (snort) are indeed my friends. I was a bit crabby at day 3, but by the end of 2 weeks, I was really feeling better.

I guess you are what you eat, and I was a White Castle.

I still love my naughty, fried, noshable foodies; but I think I can be better about my food choices overall.

Physically feeling better helps in all departments of our lives, and I am grateful to be on a better path. (But I maintain my right to fries and cookies.)

I am trying to see the people and situations in my life I find so difficult to deal with from a new perspective.

Sometimes you have to look really hard to see the good things in the bad times, but it is really worth the effort.

Turns out that on occasion, the things you thought were weaknesses in yourself turn out to be the things that make you special and needed.

This is starting to sound like a greeting card, but its true. The best and worst thing about your life, is that it depends on you and what you choose.
